Deuteronomy Consulting builds and runs finance systems for contracting businesses.
We started because of a pattern that shows up in nearly every growing contractor. The finance function was designed for a smaller company. Nobody had time to redesign it. And the cost of that shows up as money going out twice, and jobs priced on optimism.
Most consultancies would tell you that’s a discipline problem. It isn’t. It’s a systems problem, and it responds to systems.
What we are building sits between two worlds that rarely meet properly: finance, and the technology that should be carrying it. Ledgers, approvals, costing and reporting are all still done by hand in most contracting businesses, not because anyone chose that, but because nobody has ever come in and joined the two together.
That is the whole business. Your accountant does the accounts. We build the machinery that feeds them, and the reporting that tells you what is happening while there is still time to do something about it.
Most people who understand finance can’t build systems. Most people who can build systems have never sat inside a finance function and felt what is actually wrong with it.
We come from both sides. Years working inside finance functions — purchase ledgers, subcontractor billing, VAT processes, management reporting, month-end — doing the work rather than reviewing it. And years building the systems underneath: data pipelines, automation, reporting that runs on its own.
That combination is the point. We know which numbers matter because we have had to produce them by hand, to a deadline, with someone waiting. And we can build the thing that produces them without anyone touching it. So instead of a better process for someone to follow, you get the process removed.
The aim is always the same: less grunt work, fewer hands touching the same figure, and information that arrives early enough to change the decision.
Construction, civils and utilities is where we’re strongest — subcontractor billing, job costing, retentions and applications for payment are a particular kind of mess and we know it well.
We work UK-wide. Most of what we do runs on your systems rather than in your office, so distance rarely matters. We’ll come to you at the start of an engagement and whenever it earns its place; the rest happens remotely.
Standalone tooling — dashboards, costing models, automation — we build for any sector, and increasingly for clients outside the UK where the work is remote by nature. A reporting problem looks much the same wherever it turns up.
Deuteronomy Consulting Ltd is not a firm of accountants. We do not prepare statutory accounts, carry out audits, act as agent with HM Revenue & Customs, or advise on tax.
If we spot something in your records that looks inconsistent, we’ll tell you what we’ve seen as a matter of fact, tell you it sits outside what we can advise on, and recommend you put it to a qualified adviser. We won’t tell you what the treatment should be. That’s not a limitation we’re working around — it’s the shape of the business.
